We think in dualistic patterns: life/death, digital/analogue, reason/emotion, etc. It makes life more comfortable. That is why we are simultaneously interested in every upset and disturbance of these oppositions in their triviality and predictability. The project that Matěj Pavlík has prepared for Galerie mladých does so in the spirit of a forensic and speculative turn in art, through the interplay of historiography and artistic interpretation. He draws on the remarkable fact, unknown to many, that some academics and politicians turned to Western esotericism in the late socialist period, and that their interest went hand in hand with the contemporary intellectual reformulation of Marxist materialism.
